Many armchair general managers will give their take on where they think teams will go and how they will build. Head coaches are also in those discussions as vacancies always pop up, especially after the season is over.
These discussions are most prominent in the Toronto market. If the Leafs lose a few games, fans are looking for the coach to be fired and who would replace him. Toronto fans woke up today hearing that former Stanley Cup winning coach Craig Berube may have his sights set towards southern Ontario.
Berube, who was recently fired from the St Louis Blues has some history with the Toronto organization. Back in the early 90s he was a player for the team and was also involved in one of the largest player swaps in NHL history when Doug Gilmour came to the Maple Leafs and Berube was sent to the Calgary Flames.
His old school style of coaching and strong demand on his players could bode well for the Maple Leafs. However, it appears for now that Sheldon Keefe's job is safe as the team continues to win hockey games and has the confidence of his new general manager Brad Treliving.
Keefe was awarded a three-year contract extension earlier this season that will take hold next year.
In the NHL anything is possible, confidence can be eroded quickly especially if a team that's expected to go far begins to go wrong.
