Ahead of game 1 tomorrow, everyone has their vote on who they want to win. Especially this year, where the two teams could not be more divisive. Lots of fans have very big opinions on both teams and the fan voting has been revealed showing how fans receive each team.
With 1300 respondents in the online poll, the results were very interesting to see. Within Canada, 68% of all fans are cheering for the Oilers to win the cup. Within America it's much less patriotic however, with only 53% of fans cheering for the Panthers to win the cup.
Because of the 30 year Canadian cup drought, Canadians seem more eager for a Canadian team to win than Americans. It's especially interesting how when you break it down province by province, you can see the support levels from each province and infer why they would be where they are.
Quebec leads the charts, as the Oilers and Canadiens don't really have any history of hating each other. The Canadiens fans seem to be happy cheering for the Canadian team, whereas Winnipeg fans seem to have less support for the Oilers due to their playoff history and proximity.
Last is British Columbia, where Vancouver fans seem to be the least supportive by a long shot. This is most likely due to the Oilers and Canucks facing off the most during the regular season and the Oilers eliminating the Canucks in the second round.
Whatever the reason, everyone has their reasons for who they cheer for. Whether it's being a fan of one team or hating on the other, everyone has the team they'd rather see lift the cup. Most Canadians are happy to cheer for the cup drought to end.
