On Wednesday, the Edmonton Oilers were extremely interested in a game between the Montreal Canadiens and Columbus Blue Jackets. According to a report from Eric Engels of Sportsnet, the Oilers sent three scouts to evaluate players in that game.

From the Oilers' perspective, there's plenty of reasons to scout that particular game. Both the Canadiens and Blue Jackets will be sellers at the trade deadline or earlier, and have positions of need for the Oilers. Particularly, Columbus has a surplus of defenceman, and Montreal has goaltenders.

On the Columbus side, the Oilers could be looking at a rental defenceman in Erik Gudbranson, or longer term options like the younger Adam Boqvist or Andrew Peeke. From Montreal, the Oilers were supposedly very interested in Samuel Montembeault, but also could trade for Cayden Primeau or the veteran Jake Allen.

There's many other possibilities, including forward depth available as well on both sides, but it seems likely from the scouting presence that a trade could occur with one of these teams during this season. For now, we'll have to continue to speculate.
