Die hard Edmonton Oilers fans will always have a soft spot for former defenceman Oscar Klefbom. After years away from the team, the Swedish defenceman made a surprise return in a story sure to bring a smile to fans.
Klefbom last played in the NHL back in August 2020 in the covid-adjusted Stanley Cup playoffs' qualifying round, before finally being hanging up the skates for good. After a long battle with an arthritic shoulder, Klefbom decided to put his health first.
Klefbom's career ending injury was devastating for both the himself and the fanbase. With all-star potential, Klefbom's demise is easily one of the most heartbreaking hockey stories in modern day hockey.
Although he's deeply missed on the ice and in the locker-room, insider Daniel Nugent-Bowman recently shared an incredible update on the former blue-liner with fans.
Oscar Klefbomb back in Edmonton
A few of us had a nice chat with Oscar Klefbom after Oilers practice today. He said:
- Last night's game was the first hockey game he's watched since he retired. He still felt like a player and found it too painful to watch.
- He has a 15-month-old son and another on the way.
- He plans on getting back into the game either in development or coaching in a couple years but isn't ready yet.
- He's basically pain-free but still has some restrictions. He can't take a full golf swing, for instance. He's slowly trying to build up some muscle in his shoulder.
Overall, Klefbom was in great spirits. He flashed that mega-watt smile a bunch. He said he was so happy to be back in Edmonton. He's staying at a hotel right now but will be moving to
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' house tomorrow to finish his stay before going back to Sweden.
According to Daniel Nugent-Bowman, this is the first NHL hockey he's seen since retiring. One can only imagine how hard it's been for him mentally, and I'm sure the team welcomed him with open arms.
To make matters even sweeter, Klefbom will be shacking up with Nugent-Hopkins for the remainder of his stay. Who knows? Maybe they'll both go horseback riding together.
Personally, it's great to see Klefbom back in Northern Alberta. It's just a shame that the Oilers played an abysmal game against the Ducks, but i'm confident the team will bounce-back.
Regardless, welcome back, Kleff!
