BREAKING: Patrik Laine opens up about decision to leave NHL
Earlier today, news broke that Columbus Blue Jackets star forward Patrik Laine will be leaving the team indefinitely to enter the NHL's Players' Assistance Program. Now moments ago on Instagram, Laine has released a statement himself explaining the decision.
Dear fans and supporters,
I wanted to take a moment to address my need to step away from the game for a while. After careful consideration and discussions with my support network and the team, I have recognized the importance of prioritizing my mental health and well being. Hockey has been my passion and my life, but I have come to realize that in order to perform at my best, I need to take this time to focus on myself.
I am grateful for the understanding and support of my team, the league, and our fans during this time. I look forward to returning to the ice with a clear mind and renewed energy. Thank you for respecting my privacy during this time and for your continued support.
Laine offered no explanation for the reason behind his need to enter the program, as is his right.
A part of Laine's statement does touch on the fact that he's struggled on the ice recently, and thats the reason he needs to take this time to focus on his mental health - to return to being the elite goal scorer he can be. Laine scored an incredible 44 goals in his second season, but has declined in recent years, and now only has 6 goals and 9 points in 18 games.
Hopefully, Laine takes the time he needs and receives the help he needs to return to the NHL and reach his full potential - all hockey fans will be cheering for him.
