It was reported by Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period that former Oilers defenseman Cody Ceci was a player of interest by the Vancouver Canucks as the team made two trades in the past 24 hours.
There was talk last night that the Canucks had discussed a move for Cody Ceci from SJ, as well. Clearly that ended when things heated back up for
Marcus Pettersson, and Stars end up with Ceci and Granlund now.
Canucks very busy on the trade front
The 31-year-old Ceci spent three seasons with the Oilers from 2021 through 2024 where he produced modest numbers as his best total was 28 points through 78 games in 2021-2022.
It was clear that the Canucks were interested in changing their blue line and are clearly not afraid to make a deal as they were aggressive once again.
We have acquired
Mikael Granlund and Cody Ceci from the @sanjosesharks for a 2025 First-Round Pick and 2025 Conditional Third-Round Pick.
Ceci was moved to the San Jose Sharks prior to the season beginning and during his time, he played 54 games scored four goals with 11 assists for 15 points and was a - 9 while holding 21 minutes and 46 seconds of average ice time.
It's safe to say he will likely fit on the bottom pairing as the Canucks are fairly stacked on the top 2 with
Quinn Hughes,
Tyler Myers, recently acquired Marcus Pettersson and
Filip Hronek.
Oilers will continue to shop prior to the trade deadline
While their division rivals change their roster, the Oilers are set to take on the struggling Toronto Maple Leafs as the Leafs have not won in their last three games and have not been able to score many goals.
We get the five o'clock start time they come into our building and we are forced to change our schedule around.
The Oilers will also continue to evaluate recently acquired defenseman John Klingberg as he has recovered from double hip resurfacing surgery which shut him down in November 2023.
The game will take place on February 1st and game time will be 7:00 PM eastern.
