NHL insider Frank Seravalli has been hitting towards the Oilers making an impact trade early this year, but is now saying it may not be a good idea.

Seravalli explained the notion of making a trade in October or November or even December would be detrimental to the Oilers as most teams do not have available players that could be available at the trade deadline. Most teams have set their budgets, and they would like to see how their rosters shake out in the first three months of the season.

Great players tend to be available in the back half of the year as some teams have fallen out of playoff contention and may be looking to sell off some of their talent. Seravalli feels the Oilers need to work through their issues even though they've only played one game so far this season which resulted in a 6-0 loss to the Winnipeg Jets. In the preseason, Seravalli had reported the Oilers were looking to make a big trade early on.

Several pundits and many fans have expressed issues with the Oilers defense after losing key players including Philip Broberg, Cody Ceci which has exposed some weakness in their blue line. This loss is coupled with a poor showing at training camp and during their preseason games which has fueled this fire.

It's unlikely general manager Stan Bowman will do a knee jerk reaction and make a trade early in the season. With several new faces, it's up to head coach Kris Knoblauch and assistant coach Paul Coffey To continue to evaluate their roster and work with the team as they look to avoid another terrible start much like last season.

The Oilers will be at home to host Connor Bedard and the revamped Chicago Blackhawks has the team looks for a bounce back game. The game will be held on October 12 and game time will be 10:00 PM Eastern.
