Simpson began with Sportsnet since the network's inception in 1998, and has worked there ever since except for a three year window in the United States. Now 60 years old, Simpson's contract unexpectedly wasn't renewed in the offseason.
Simpson recently sat down with the Toronto Star for an interview on her legacy, and while she did not discuss the specifics of her departure from Sportsnet, Arthur hinted that Simpson's refusal to participate in a gambling segment caused some friction with the network. Simpson explained that given her close relationship with players and executives, she wasn't comfortable with the gambling aspect.
Sports gambling is really making a hardcore push in all forms of media after its regulation nationally. There's obvious negative aspects to gambling that some aren't comfortable promoting so openly, and it should've been totally okay for Simpson to decline the segment as one of the most tenured employees on the network.
Arthur also mentioned a very light comparison between Christine Simpson's departure and Lisa LaFlamme's departure from CTV after her refusal to dye her hair - implying that age could've been a factor too.
Simpson's replacement is expected to be Sportsnet's most recent hire, 25 year old reporter Anna Dua. She debuted on air only two years ago, but has extensive experience in the USA.
For longtime sports fans who have seen Simpson on air for years, hearing such a petty reason behind her departure is disheartening to hear. Hopefully Simpson is able to secure another role in the near future, and get back to doing what she loves.
