This past offseason was one of the quietest ones for General Manager Ken Holland in the past several years. The Oilers made minor adjustments and did not enact any major changes to the team's roster because he and Jay Woodcroft believed this team configuration deserved a second chance to pursue a Stanley Cup.
So far, it has been nothing short of a disaster. While fans expected a strong start, hoping to lead their division from the get-go, they have instead posted a 2-5-1 record and look nothing like their former selves.
Many of the issues the team faces are related to the scheme changes made by Woodcroft, as he attempts to align more closely with the Vegas Golden Knights, who defeated the Oilers in the second round last year.
Having this much firepower and witnessing it sputter, coupled with porous defence and inconsistent goaltending at times, does not bode well for a playoff-bound team. I anticipate a coaching change within the next few days if they experience another loss tonight.
Many individuals must be held accountable for this situation, including players and the general manager. However, as the saying goes, you can't fire a team, so you fire the coach.
