Canucks concerned that Oilers will trade for this player at deadline

This season, the Calgary Flames are controlling the trade deadline with several quality defenceman available for trade. Chris Tanev in particular is drawing interest across the league, notably from the Oilers and Canucks. According to a new update from Elliotte Friedman, the Canucks are actually concerned that the Oilers could trade for Tanev.

Until now, the reported price to acquire Tanev was believed to be just a second round draft pick, but clearly with interest drawing from over the league, the Flames may hold out for a first round pick for Tanev. This could create a total bidding match between the Oilers and Canucks, if both teams are serious about adding him.

The Oilers have been reported to be primarily interested in adding a high impact forward, but a defenceman should be in the cards as well. At the moment, it seems more likely that the team could get meaningful contributions from their existing forwards than being able to succeed with the Nurse/Ceci pairing in tough playoff minutes.

If the Oilers are serious about making a deep run in the playoffs, having a deep defence core is absolutely essential. The Oilers do have their draft picks and prospects to make an attractive offer for Tanev.

Now 34 years old, Tanev is praised throughout the league for being one of the most reliable and consistent defensive defenceman. He's never put up gaudy offensive numbers, but his defensive analytics and grittier stats like blocked shots and hits have always been near the top in the league. He's on a reasonable contract of $4.5M that the Oilers could fit if they move money out as well. It's clear that the Oilers will be trading for a high quality player this year - we'll just have to wait and see who it is.
