Along with the major personal announcement, people were connecting the dots that this would coincide with another decision for the engaged couple - Draisaitl's pending UFA contract. On his Instagram post, Draisaitl liked a comment from a friend that hinted towards news of signing an extension with the Oilers.
The comment was left by Morgan Ellis, a 32 year old Prince Edward Island native that's currently playing for the Berlin Polar Bears in Germany's DEL. He must be a friend of Draisaitl's, and his comment hinted that an extension with the Oilers may be imminent. Draisaitl liking the comment is an affirmation of it, meaning an extension could really be on the table soon.
A few weeks ago, Draisaitl's agent Jiri Poner spoke to the media and said that a contract will be reached by August of this offseason, or he will go to free agency. Poner also expressed that he's very confident that a deal will be reached. Perhaps Leon needed this personal time to spend with his now fiancée, and the couple will make the decision to lock down their future in Edmonton when they return from vacation.
By every indication, Leon Draisaitl will reach a deal in the very near future to make him a lifelong Oiler. The Oilers will lock up one of the greatest players in their storied franchise history, and Draisaitl has locked up a lifelong partner - everybody wins!
