Include the Oilers, the Washington Capitals, Colorado Avalanche Vegas golden Knights, and the Philadelphia Flyers have less than two months to get within the $88 million cap.
All NHL teams are allowed to be 10% over during the summer as they continue to reconfigure their rosters and acquire new talent through free agency and other means.
The Oilers, who are run by interim general manager Jeff Jackson are currently over the cap by $354,000. While that number seems very small it still presents an issue on how to structure their roster has Jackson continues to address issues in the lineup including secondary scoring then closer to next year's trade deadline another defenseman for another cup run.
The Oilers main issue is locking up three of their most important players to long term deals which include Leon Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard this season and Connor McDavid the following summer.
It's been reported that Jackson is willing to move a player like Cody Ceci who holds a $3.2 million cap hit in his final year of his deal. Several teams are interested in his services including the San Jose Sharks, Utah hockey club and the Anaheim Ducks.
As his general manager search continues, much work needs to be done for the Oilers and all the other teams that are in this predicament as training camp is less than two months away.
