Oilers general manager Stan Bowman was a guest on TSN's OverDrive where he was asked on his thoughts of the new salary cap numbers that will be for the next three seasons and Bowman gave a scathing comment regarding this change.
How will the NHL salary cap increase impact teams? Stan Bowman shares the managerial perspective on the salary cap jumping significant and the impact on the contracts for the players.
Bowman expressed that all NHL teams will need to adapt to their new reality as the abundance of salary cap numbers will change the landscape in terms of the contracts being given, potential buyouts and even trades with retention.
This is reliant on a bunch of speculative cap hits and a $97M cap but it's not entirely unrealistic for the #Oilers to sign Mikko Rantanen if he were to hit free agency. I'm sure the professionals who know the cap far better than me can make it work if it is this close. Bowman feels there will be more flexibility for teams who are at the cap
He then explained with a cheeky response that he's quite certain that the agents will just want more money for their clients. This comment led to laughter right across the board as this means the contracts will be going up much higher and the agents will get more money out of the deal.
'I'm sure the agents just want more money for their clients'
This rise in the salary cap has been long-awaited by fans, general managers and the players as the COVID-19 flat cap is now a distant memory and the NHS will see explosive growth in terms of revenues and teams ability to add more players to their rosters.
The NHL salary cap limit is expected to reach $104 million in 2026-27. No player can exceed 20% of their team's cap, meaning the maximum cap hit would be $20.8 million. How much do you think #Oilers Connor McDavid will make annually on his next contract? Other teams aren't thrilled with the cap rise
On the flip side, other teams in the NHL are not too thrilled with the idea of a $113,500,000 salary cap as this would mean the team would be over $80 million on the cap floor and some owners are not willing to go that high.
This news would be great for the Oilers as the team is looking to lock up two key stars in the next two years and with the cap on the steady increase, it's likely they'll be able to retain players like Evan Bouchard and Connor Mcdavid without any issues.
It's a new era for the NHL and fans get to see teams change their rosters accordingly and potentially see even super teams starting to form with owners willing to spend to the cap in order to acquire as much talent as possible.
