Oilers fan favorite Derek Ryan has embraced his new role within the Oilers organization as he has played two games with the Bakersfield condors of the American Hockey League, but he won't be down for long.

The 38-year-old forward was placed on waivers on January 19th as the Oilers were preparing to look and evaluate Oilers rookie center Noah Philp. Ryan act as a professional and after he cleared waivers, he was assigned to the Bakersfield Condors where he has accepted his role working with younger players.

Derek Ryan wants another shot with the Oilers, some players not happy with the decision

According to Kurt Leavins of the Edmonton Journal, some Oilers may not have been happy with the decision to send down Ryan.

I agreed with the decision to send Derek Ryan to the AHL. But we should not assume that was a happy circumstance in the Oilers' dressing room. I suspect Stan Bowman discovered just how close-knit that group in there is.

During a recent interview, Ryan spoke about the transition from the NHL to the AHL, and that he has a job to do with the condors and hopes that he will have another chance with the Oilers sooner than later.

"Trying to carry myself the same way I have for the past 9 years."

He has spent four seasons with the Edmonton Oilers organization and has been a fixture on their bottom 6. In the past two games with condors, he has one goal and one assist.

There is a slight possibility that he will return to the Oilers at some point after the trade deadline as the Oilers continue to evaluate their roster and prepare for what could be a very busy day. If Oilers players put some extra pressure on management to have him around, he'll surely be there as the 13th forward.

Oilers looking forward to their two-week break

The Oilers have three games remaining in their schedule before the entire NHL shuts down for the Four Nations faceoff tournament. They will be on the road for their next two games where they will take on the St Louis Blues on Tuesday February 4th and then with the Chicago Blackhawks at the United Center on Wednesday February 5th.

They will finish off their schedule against the new look Colorado Avalanche on Friday February 7th where game time will be 9:00 PM eastern.
