The Oilers have previously been linked to Pettersson in trade this season, as they pursue a top four puck moving defender.
According to new reports from Penguins insider Josh Yohe, the Oilers and Canucks are two of the top two suitors for Marcus Pettersson.
It's interesting for Yohe to note that other teams are expected to enter the mix to acquire Petterssson soon, but so far, the market is pretty slim. Perhaps that would incline the Oilers to make a trade earlier, before the Four Nations Faceoff schedule break.
Oilers insider Jim Matheson previously reported the price to acquire Pettersson would be a second round draft pick and a prospect.
Both the Oilers and Canucks could match this asking price, and perhaps more to accommodate salary retention. If both teams are capable of making the deal, it will come down to which team pounces first.
Marcus Pettersson fits the Oilers nearly perfectly as a two way defender, but is a left shot instead of a right. His career best season came last year, where he scored 30 points and had an impressive rating of +28 on a poor Penguins team.
It seems that Pettersson will either go to the Oilers or Canucks, so if Stan Bowman and Edmonton believe he's the best available option, they may want to make a move soon to prevent him from going to a rival.
