On a recent episode of the Oilersnation Everyday podcast, Name from the past has been linked to the Edmonton Oilers in Anaheim Ducks defenseman Brian Dumoulin as a potential trade target this year.
"His numbers defensively are pretty much identical, if not slightly better than Brett Kulak when the Oilers acquired him from Montreal." - Oilersnation Everyday During the segment, it was revealed that Dumoulin has very similar numbers compared to Oilers defenseman Brett kulak when Kulak was acquired from the Montreal Canadiens. Many feel that he would be a depth defenceman that would be attractive to the Oilers as the team appears to be shying away from acquiring a big-name star.
Oilers looking to add depth defense at the trade deadline
The 33-year-old defenseman would give veteran experience to the Oilers as he has been in the NHL since 2009 when he was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes, second round 51st overall. He began his career with the Pittsburgh Penguins where he remained from 2013 through 2023 and played one season with Seattle and then with the Ducks.
Coach Sullivan on Dumoulin: "He was such a big part of the teams that won the Stanley Cup. He's a great person and a great leader off the ice and in the locker room... I can't say enough about his contribution to making the Penguins what we are."
Through 49 games this year, he has no goals but 12 assists and is a - 4 but has been a plus player as he holds a + 92 in his career.
Ducks may be willing to retain salary to make deal happen
It was also revealed that the Ducks only paid a fourth-round draft pick for Dumoulin over the summer which likely means the Oilers may not have to pay as high as they did for Kulak. It's also possible that the Anaheim Ducks could retain some of his salary as he is on his remaining year of his deal which holds a cap hit of $3.15 million AAV.
Considering he is playing 19 minutes a game for the Ducks, he may be what the Oilers need to help put them over the top as he has one several Stanley cups.
