It's been five days since Oilers prospect Connor Clattenburg had been sent back to his OHL team in Flint MI, where today he received the captaincy to the Flint Firebirds.

Clattenburg had spent several days with the Oilers rookie camp in Penticton BC. His play was certainly noticed as he played two games and gave a physical edge that made him stand out.

During those two games, Oilers reporters and pundits including Edmonton Journal Bruce McCurdy took notes on his style of play and what he brought to the table. It's clear that he would become a shutdown forward as he administered five hits in his first period of play and put himself into several positions to potentially score a goal.

But after those two games, the Oilers felt that he would be better off to head back to the OHL to continue to mature and grow his game.

The 19-year-old left winger who stands at six foot 2 and 198 lbs was selected in the 2024 entry draft, fifth round, 160th overall. During the 2023-2024 season he split time between the Soo Greyhounds and Flint Firebirds. He played 60 games, scoring 13 goals with 16 assists for 29 points and had 89 penalty minutes.

Receiving the captaincy is quite the accomplishment especially at 19 years old where he has shown that he has good leadership qualities and that he would be able to lead his team. Management will continue to monitor how he develops and if he were to make the team next year, it's likely he would fit in their bottom 6 as a shut down forward who would face some of the best players.

These are the kind of players the Oilers need to hit on when it comes to draft picks, salary cap flexibility and depth players.
