According to NHL Public Relations, the Edmonton Oilers ranked first last year in high danger shots on net, with Hyman leading the league in high danger goals.
These stats show that the Oilers are creating more threatening offence than anyone else in the league, and it's in the areas where playoff goals are scored - fight in front of the net. Specifically Zach Hyman is able to bury his chances while being mauled by defenders, which is a premium skill in the playoffs when space becomes more difficult to find. Then again, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl can pick apart a defence anytime.
The NHL also released a graphic of leading goal scorers by zone, and surprisingly, Zach Hyman wasn't included in the net front. The list was accumulated over three years, so maybe in a few more Hyman will increase his totals. Leon Draisaitl was represented in his office, an area Oilers fans have seen him wire countless one-timers into the net.
It's no surprise that the Oilers are ranking near the top of the league in offensive stats - they were the highest scoring team last year. However, it's positive to see them ranking highly in chances around the net-front, where playoff style goals are most often scored. The Oilers have elite players to make elite skill plays, but they've also transformed into one of the toughest teams in the league, and that's a recipe for playoff success.
