On the latest episode of the real Kyper and Bourne show, Edmonton Oilers president Jeff Jackson states a preview of what the Oilers will be shopping for as the March NHL trade deadline approaches.
«We're always looking to make improvements, probably adding a bit of size lower down in our lineup is something that we're looking at» Jeff Jackson on Real Kyper & Bourne
Oilers looking to add size and grit for bottom six forwards
For some time, Jackson along with general manager Stan Bowman have felt that the Oilers need to bolster their size especially in their bottom 6 as that is a key ingredient to success in the NHL playoffs.
Jackson also referred two other teams in the league as many are still in a race for the playoffs and could result in a quiet deadline.
Jeff Jackson just now on Real Kyper and Bourne says he still doesn't have a timeline on Evander Kane. We saw him skating a few days ago, but looks like he's still a ways away. There's a lot of teams still in the hunt, so we're not really sure how it's gonna play out as far as teams moving players. There's a handful of teams that might be thinking right now that's what they're gonna do, but beyond those handful of teams, there's so many teams in the race - it might end up being a quiet deadline.» - Jeff Jackson
Several players may be available for the Oilers to look at including the now unrestricted free agent Brandon Saad who had terminated his contract with the St Louis Blues earlier today.
Having won two Stanley cups with the Chicago Blackhawks and deep ties to Stan Bowman, there's a possibility that the Oilers will look to his services if the price is right.
I wouldn't be opposed to adding Saad at close to league minimum for the remainder of the year. You have to think the would be in the mix, given their reported interest in adding a top-9 forward and Bowman's history with the player.
4 Nations Faceoff will provide time to evaluate market and team
The Oilers along with every other NHL team in the league will have a chance to evaluate their rosters and have their lists ready for the March trade deadline as the league will be shut down for two weeks do to the Four Nations face off tournament.
The team will have a chance to make some calls two other general managers and potentially craft a few deals while the league is suspended.
The Oilers will want to maintain their momentum as they are currently sitting first overall in the Pacific division and 4th overall in the NHL.
