The Oilers called up defenceman Josh Brown this morning, but most fans were hoping for the offensive star prospect Savoie.
Savoie has 3 goals and 10 points in his last 4 games, and is inching towards the point per game threshold this season. He's near the top of the AHL in rookie scoring now at 21 years old, but the Oilers still don't look to be in a position to call him up anytime soon.
The Oilers acquired Savoie this summer in trade from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Ryan McLeod. Savoie, an Edmonton native, was drafted 9th overall by the Sabres in 2022 with star offensive potential.
Earlier this season, Oilers analyst Alan Mitchell hinted that Edmonton would not call up Savoie until halfway through the season at least. They want Savoie to get as much consistent development time as possible.
Even though the Oilers are now approaching the halfway point of the season, the approach of letting Savoie develop still makes the most sense.
In the 2022-23 season, the year after he was drafted, Savoie played for four different teams and sustained an injury in his NHL debut. He was bounced around significantly and his prospect stock took a hit because of it.
With consistent playing time on the Oilers AHL team, he's beginning to rediscover his elite offensive game. The Oilers should leave him be to dominate the AHL for a while longer, but still, fans are eager to see him.
The Oilers also just don't have room for Savoie in their lineup now. The only place he could possibly enter the lineup is in place of Jeff Skinner on the fourth line, which may do more harm than good for his development.
The Oilers have an exciting prospect in Matthew Savoie, and it's great to see him finding success in the AHL now. Hopefully it continues, and next season, he makes a push for the NHL squad.
