Earlier this season, fans began to notice a steady drop in shots from Connor McDavid, which could make sense if he was playing through a nagging injury.
Oilers analyst Allan Mitchell raised the concern on Lowetide, agreeing that McDavid's been a tick behind usual this season, and believing injury or fatigue to be the cause.
Mitchell pointed out that McDavid ranks 9th in Oilers forwards in 5v5 points per 60 since January 1, 2025.
That's a sample size of 14 games where McDavid is still scoring at an elite rate, but not as high as Oilers and hockey fans have come to expect from the Captain.
Currently on pace to score 110 points, that would be McDavid's lowest total since the 2020-21 season, where he only played 56 games. So far this season, McDavid has missed only 6 games.
The one injury McDavid sustained against the Columbus Blue Jackets seemed to be a lower body injury. He made a remarkably quick recovery from the injury, so it may be possible that he's still playing through some pain - or even another undisclosed injury.
Even if McDavid is on pace to have a lower-scoring season, there's no doubt he can still decide a game at will. The Oilers have played an extraordinary amount of games in the last few seasons, and this year has been an accelerated schedule to make room for the 4 Nations Faceoff. There could be fatigue, but McDavid still steps up the moment he's needed.
