The Blues are currently seven points behind the Calgary Flames for the final wild card spot in the Western Conference and it's a tall order for the Blues to come out of this deficit as other teams continue to strengthen and attempt to make a run as well.
Blues general manager Doug Armstrong has never shied away from making trades at the deadline in attempt to improve his team for the long run. There are several players who could fit the Oilers needs and strengthen their chances of going on a long Stanley Cup run.
In offense, players like forward Radek Faksa could be a nice fit for the Oilers bottom six. He currently has three goals with 10 points but could find himself on the right side of goal scoring as the Oilers are far better offensively than the Blues.
He currently holds a $3.25 million cap hit and he is on his last year of his deal which could give the Oilers some depth.
Oscar Sundqvist could be another option for the Oilers as he has won the Stanley Cup twice in his career and is considered a reliable piece.
He's also a bargain as he holds a $1.5 million cap hit and has no trade protection through 2025- 2026. A player of this caliber could be beneficial for the Oilers as he would give playoff and Stanley Cup experience while at a low cost financially.
Defense has been another area of concern for the Oilers as they have taken chances on John klingberg with a $1 million prorated contract.
If the Oilers were to add another top end defenseman like Colton Parayko, it would be a much larger trade with assets and potential draft picks heading back to the Blues as he holds a $6.5 million cap hit and has 28 points in 52 games while being a right shot. This deal would be a little more complex to make.
Other honorable mentions are Ryan Suter, Nick Leddy and Cam Fowler who all
hold their own value but could be another complicated deal has Fowler was just dealt to the Blues and with likely fetch draft picks and prospects as well.
The Oilers have also mentioned their goaltending as a potential area to look at and the Blues have their starting goaltender Jordan Binnington who had won the Stanley Cup in 2019.
His season has not gone as well as he holds .898 save percentage through 37 games played. At $6 million, the oilers may not attempt to sign him even though goaltending could be a need if the team wants to win the Stanley Cup.
It's safe to say the Oilers will be shopping in the coming weeks and it remains to be seen on how in depth general manager Stan Bowman will go in terms of adding players to his roster but change is inevitable.
