Nurse, a 28-year-old from Hamilton, Ontario, actively supports various initiatives promoting diversity and inclusion through sports. He works with Free Play for Kids to provide marginalized children, including refugees, new Canadians, and Indigenous youth, with safe and inclusive sports opportunities. Nurse is also an ambassador for Right To Play, empowering children to overcome challenges through sports.
His dedication to helping others stems from his role as a professional athlete, a Canadian, a father, and the son of an immigrant. In addition to his community involvement, Nurse established the Darnell Nurse Excellence Scholarship and has supported youth mentorship, sponsored players in the Greater Toronto Hockey League, and contributed to food banks and healthcare during the pandemic.
The King Clancy Trophy winner, chosen by NHL executives, will be announced at the 2023 NHL Awards in Nashville on June 26. The first-place recipient receives a $25,000 donation to a charity of their choice, while the runners-up each receive $5,000. The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation's Oilers 50/50 Bonus Raffle, part of their Hockey for All Kids in Oil Country initiative, is ongoing until June 19, with nearly $3.5 million in prizes.
