The Canucks have worked on trying to make Desharnais a viable defenseman on their team as he was signed to a two year deal worth $4 million on July 1st 2024. Many felt that he would be an impactful third pairing defenseman but has not lived up to his contract.
It became clear that he has not taken the steps forward as he back-to-back games recently where he took too many penalties. The Canucks are fighting for their playoff lives as they try to get back into the race after having a tough few months with
personal problems and dressing room issues.
It's been documented that he has been in trade rumors over the past couple of months including 32 Thoughts Podcast and Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman who had mentioned during one of his pods that the Vancouver Canucks we're attempting to find Desharnais a new home.
If the Canucks are wanting to find a buyer for the beleaguered defenseman, it's safe to say they would need to eat 50% of his salary to move him along. It will be tough to find a market willing to take on his contract considering how poorly he has played over the past year.
With Desharnais on the block, it's highly unlikely the Oilers would even consider bringing him back as the team is looking forward to other players who could help them in their plan for this year's Stanley Cup playoffs.
Times are tough in Vancouver and there is no margin for error which likely means that this may be the last time the Canucks see Desharnais in their uniform.
