In 2022, the Edmonton Oilers introduced their very own Hall of Fame, a unique way to pay tribute to their legendary players without retiring jersey numbersa distinction reserved for those enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame. The names of these revered players find a permanent home in the ring above the PCL Loge Level at Rogers Place.
The inaugural Hall of Fame class was unveiled in November 2022 during a game against the New Jersey Devils. It included hockey icons such as Al Hamilton, Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Grant Fuhr, Paul Coffey, Mark Messier, Glenn Anderson, Kevin Lowe, Glen Sather, and Rod Phillips, all automatically inducted due to their Hockey Hall of Fame status. Ryan Smyth and Lee Fogolin became the first non-Hockey Hall of Fame inductees to join this prestigious group.
This year, the spotlight shines on a defenseman from the Oilers' dynasty years in the 1980s and one of their standout forwards from the '90s.
Doug Weight, a second-round pick by the Rangers in the 1990 draft, found his way to the Oilers via a trade for Esa Tikkanen in March 1993. Over the course of nine seasons with the Oilers, Weight made his mark, tallying 157 goals and 577 points across 588 games.
Charlie Huddy, on the other hand, entered the Oilers' ranks as an undrafted free agent but quickly became a vital part of Edmonton's blue line. He contributed 368 points during his 11 seasons with the Oilers and played a crucial role in the team's five Stanley Cup championships.
As fate would have it, the Oilers will host this year's Hall of Fame ceremony before a game against the New York Rangers. A fitting choice, considering that Glen Sather, the current senior advisor and alternate governor for the Rangers, served as the general manager in Edmonton who acquired both Weight and Huddy.
