As the 2023 NHL Draft Lottery approaches, many are keeping a close eye on Connor Bedard, the projected first-overall pick. At just 17 years old, Bedard has already made history by being the first player to receive exceptional status in the Western Hockey League. He had an incredible season with West Van Academy Prep's U18 team, scoring 43 goals and 84 points in just 36 games, and was named MVP at the young age of 14. He has continued to impress with the Regina Pats, tallying an impressive 71 goals and 72 assists in only 57 games.

But Bedard's story is not just about his on-ice success. Dan Robson of The Athletic recently wrote an article about the deep loss that motivates the young player. Bedard's grandfather, Garth, was killed in a car accident caused by an impaired driver. Bedard's family and the Pats' front office kept the news from him so he could play in a game, where he scored two goals and added two assists, earning first star honors. Only after the game was Bedard told about his grandfather's passing.

Bedard's response to the devastating news shows his character and heart. He said, "Grandpa would want me to play." Just three nights later, he scored an overtime goal to beat the division-leading Brandon Wheat Kings and dedicated the win to his grandfather. Bedard said, "He's definitely who I play for now and will for the rest of my life."

Despite Bedard's impressive hockey skills, it is his determination and heart that make him a true star. Grandpa Garth may not be here to see Bedard chase his dreams, but he will undoubtedly be watching proudly from above.
