In February 2023, Jesse Puljujarvi was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Patrik Puistola, giving him a second chance with a new team. Puljujarvi had spent six years in the Oilers system, but it seemed that he was not a good fit for them.

With the Hurricanes, Puljujarvi had the opportunity to play in the bottom six and gain more ice-time as Rod Brind'Amour tried to integrate him into the team.

Qualifying Offer Due: $3 million
Scoop: It was a worthy gamble for the Hurricanes, acquiring Puljujarvi for next to nothing, to see if he could find magic with some fellow Finns. It didn't work out. He didn't score a single goal in 24 total games and was a healthy scratch for eight of Carolina's 15 playoff contests.

However, despite his efforts, Puljujarvi was a healthy scratch for 15 of the 24 playoff games, and as a result, the team will not be extending a qualifying offer to him.

As a fourth- overall draft pick in 2016, Puljujarvi's qualifying offer was expected to be $3 million, but it does not appear that he fits into the Hurricanes' future plans.

It remains to be seen if he will return to play for Karpat in his home country of Finland.
