Some surprising news came out this week as Ken Holland and the Oilers lost Klim Kostin and Kailer Yamamato.

However, there was a surprise move made by the team as they chose to keep Noah Philips' rights after he decided to retire for personal reasons.

Per Ken Holland, the Oilers are qualifying Noah Philp. Philp announced he was retiring earlier this month, but the Oilers are essentially retaining his rights in the instance that something changes.

«I want to start off by thanking the Edmonton Oilers and Bakersfield Condors,» Philp said. «The treatment of players and overall atmosphere they've created is amazing. I have nothing but respect for everyone within both organizations and I'll always be grateful for the opportunity I received.

«I'm at a time in my life where I want to focus on things outside the realm of hockey. I'm doing well and wish all the best to the players, coaches and staff in Bakersfield and in Edmonton.»

Despite being offered a 2-year contract by Holland and the team, Philips decided to pursue other matters instead of playing for Bakersfield or Edmonton.

While we have to respect his decision, it is unlikely that he will change his mind.

It does raise the question of whether one would want to return to the office after retirement and how it would feel to have their rights retained by a team.

Nevertheless, the Oilers felt it was necessary to hold onto Philips' rights even after his retirement.
