The NHL Has Revealed a Major Change to Their Drafts is Incoming
Potential Shake-Up in NHL Draft Tradition
The NHL, under the leadership of Gary Bettman, is exploring a possible transformation in the way the NHL draft is conducted.
The NHL has officially notified teams it would like to hear their opinions on «decentralization» of the draft (having clubs stay at home while prospects attend NFL/NBA style). If there is desire for change, it would most likely be in 2025 with an outside chance for 2024.
In the current setup, the NHL draft allows fans to witness players engaging with their new front offices, general managers making critical decisions, and trades happening in the midst of team tables.
However, Bettman and the NHL are proposing to alter this practice. The proposed changes involve no longer announcing every pick and having teams draft remotely, away from the traditional draft event.
The NHL has made unrequested changes in the past, and it remains to be seen whether this move is in the best interests of the league and its fans.
