Former NHLer Shane O'Brien spoke on the Missin' Curfew Podcast today, saying that he believes Draisaitl will sign with the Los Angeles Kings or the Boston Bruins.
Earlier this year, former Oiler Georges Laraque also connected Draisaitl to signing with the Bruins in free agency. Now, David Pastrnak is also lobbying for the Bruins to sign Draisaitl next year. In a recent interview with Spittin' Chiclets, Pastrnak mentioned Draisaitl specifically as a player he'd like the Bruins to target next offseason. Paul Bissonette and Ryan Whitney quickly jumped in with allegations of tampering.
In the middle of an intense conference final matchups, it actually hurts to have to think of the contract status of the Oilers stars, but Leon Draisaitl's next deal will be a foundational point for the team. Currently Draisaitl is on the best value contract in the NHL for only $8M, but on his next contract, he's expected to exceed Auston Matthews as the league's highest paid player at $13.25M or more. Also needing to sign Connor McDavid and Evan Bouchard soon, the Oilers will face a hard salary cap crunch.
For the time being, the Oilers and their fans need to toss out any thoughts of contract status and just compete in this playoffs. Before the end of this era, the Edmonton Oilers need to win a Stanley Cup. They're just too talented to miss out.
