Moments ago, Connor McDavid took to social media for a rare unprompted post to X directed at Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews.

McDavid's post simply tagged Matthews directly, and said «crossbar and in, let's see it.»

McDavid's post does convey that the two could pair up for some event. At this point, Matthews has not made any sort of response to the message.

What could McDavid's Social Media Post Tagging Auston Matthews Mean?

One theory that could explain McDavid's cryptic post towards Matthews is that the two will be involved in re-making a classic McDonald's advertisement from the '90s that featured Wayne Gretzky and Mats Sundin. McDonald's teased earlier today a hockey-related announcement.

The old advertisement had Gretzky and Sundin in an empty arena shooting ridiculous trick shots and chirping each other. With McDavid's post and McDonald's, it seems there could be a remake coming soon here.

While it's still very unclear what McDavid was posting here, fans are having fun taking massive overreactions from the post. Toronto fans are joking that McDavid is joining the Leafs, and Oilers fans are joking the same thing.

It's most likely just a teaser for an upcoming promotion or advertisement that the two will be involved with. What that could be is entirely unclear though.

Whatever it is, McDavid's comments do indicate some on-ice activities that Matthews won't be able to perform at the moment. The Leafs superstar is dealing with a strange undisclosed injury this season which has caused him to miss the last 5 games.

Anytime the NHL's two biggest superstars unite for an event, it will make headlines everywhere. Even if it's just an ad, fans will be excited to see anything involving McDavid and Matthews together.
