The Edmonton Oilers dropped their third straight game to open the season against the lowly Calgary Flames, and now concerns are starting in Oil Country.

There's real concerns of having another slow start like last season after losing to two rebuilding teams already, and Captain Connor McDavid isn't having any of it. After last night's game, McDavid said that he himself needs to be better, and the entire teams needs to work harder.

«We are getting beat in a lot of battles. We're getting beat in a lot of different ways. Puck play has been bad all over. Guys fumbling it and not handling passes, (passes) in the air, passes behind guys It's just not good enough in terms of the puck play. When you are not clean with the puck it's tough to get the offence.»

«Ultimately it hasn't been good enough. Up and down the lineup, myself first and foremost. Everybody could be better and everybody will be better.»
- Connor McDavid

McDavid asked for more from the team the day before, but was only able to deliver an assist himself and was a -2 on the night. Fans and media even called out McDavid for some costly and lazy defensive play.

There's still lots of confidence around the NHL and within the Oilers locker room that the team will turn it around and be a top team once again. It could be the classic dip after a Stanley Cup Final appearance, but the Oilers had a similar horrible start last season. It's a real concern of slow starts, and the Oilers will be hard pressed to get another 16 game win streak to pull them back into the playoffs if they crater to begin the year.

The Oilers will have another favourable matchup tomorrow night at home against the Philadelphia Flyers. If they can't get a victory from another rebuilding team, then the questions around the Oilers slow start will begin to get a bit louder.
