Perry was battling for position with a Flames defenceman around the net, and initially made contact with Dan Vladar. The Flames goalie then had enough time to recover while Perry moved to the top of the crease, and as the puck crossed the line, Vladar came up to make contact with Perry. By the end of the play, Perry was standing squarely on the outside of the crease, and didn't make contact with Vladar that stopped him from making a save.
The NHL has now offered a formal explanation for the lengthy video review process that took place. According to Frank Seravalli, the NHL said that Perry had a significant presence in the crease which impaired Vladar's ability to make the save.
While Perry did initially make contact with Vladar, plenty of Oilers fans felt that he had enough time to recover, and then actually made the contact with Perry on the goal. The NHL supposedly wants more goals in the game, and this is just old-school hockey.
The Oilers had two goals overturned that could've given them a 3-1 lead in the game, but instead they fell by a score of 4-1 to the rebuilding Calgary Flames. The Oilers are starting to hear some loud concerns about another potential slow start, something that could devastate the team. It's hard to pull out a 16 game winning streak every year, so the Oilers will need to wake up quickly. What looked like an easy schedule to start the year is now a hole they'll have to dig out of.
