Corey Perry was inside the Oilers crease at the time the puck crossed the line, but was not initiating contact with the goaltender at all. Perry had made contact moments before, but Dan Vladar had enough time to recover and reposition. Vladar actually skated up towards Perry in the top of the crease and made contact with him as the puck crossed the line. It seemed like Perry's contact with Vladar wasn't egregious, and it went a bit against the spirit of the rule.
Oilers fans were shocked at the call, and it rightly does go against the spirit of the game - battling for position in the net front and fighting for greasy goals.
Then just moments afterward, Flames forward Mikael Backlund slashed Stuart Skinner in the back of the leg while just skating by on a routine play. Skinner went down in pain, which to some fans may look like an overreaction, but there's very little padding in that area. After the play, Stuart Skinner went after the referee in a heated discussion. Throughout much of this entire sequence Oilers fans were chanting at full volume that the refs, in fact, suck.
It feels like the Oilers just got attacked by both sides of the goalie interference coin in the span of just a few minutes, and the senselessness of the NHL rules were on full display. The Oilers need a response now because the referees can't adequately call the game, and they'll need to respond with a goal and a few hard body checks on Backlund.
