This news has stirred connections and thoughts of the idea that the Edmonton Oilers could bring home Rantanen as it was discussed on Oilers nations every day with Liam Horrobin.
The fact that he may only have a salary cap of 2.3 million remaining for the year is salivating for any team that's trying to win the cup including the Oilers.
Things not going well contract wise with Carolina and Rantanen
To say this is the biggest trade in the last couple of years is an understatement when many were caught by surprise including Rantanen as the Colorado Avalanche had a self-imposed salary cap which no player could make more than
Nathan MacKinnon.
"If the Oilers could somehow get their hands on Mikko Rantanen, then you got to figure it out."
Now that it's completed and he's had some time to play with the Hurricanes, it appears that his contract talks are not going well as the Hurricanes appear to be ready to make him available for trade which is stunning, nonetheless.
Rantanen to the Oilers would be a game changer
Adding Rantanen to the left side of McDavid would jolt this offence even more especially their power play as he has scored 683 points through 625 games. He would also give a strong physical presence to the forwards stading at 6'4, 215 pounds.
It's hard to say what the trade package would look like, but the Oilers would likely need to part with one established player in Ryan Nugent Hopkins who holds a cap hit of $5.1 million, an NHL ready prospect likely
Matthew Savoie and a couple of draft picks.
With the salary cap rising to $95 million next year, the Oilers would do everything they can to try to retain Rantanen as he will command a monster salary.
But if the Oilers were to just keep him at a rental and they go all the way, it will seem worth it in the long run.
