After being suspended for five games for a cross check to former Bruins Jake Debrusk, Kadri was called by former general manager Kyle Dubas and the rest of the management team to explain to Kadri but he was going to be in the long term plans of the Maple Leafs and that he would remain in Toronto for the foreseeable future even though the team was working on a deal to send him to the Calgary Flames.
At the time, his wife was nine months pregnant and due to have their child which added to the stress that was already going on between himself and the Maple Leafs. Things changed quickly As several flames players and members of the flames organization were texting and messaging him trying to convince him to waive his no trade clause.
Kadri chose to block the trade as Calgary was on his no trade list at the time. Shortly after with tensions high between the team and himself, the Maple Leafs traded Kadri to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Tyson Barrie, Alex Kerfoot and a 6th round pick in 2020.
Kadri Went on to win the Stanley Cup then chose to sign a $49 million deal over seven years with the Calgary Flames the team that was on his no trade list right from the start.
There were many who felt this trade was wrong and that the Leafs lost the deal. History will reflect on whether that's the case but in the end, his mistreatment led to a Stanley Cup win and a lucrative contract with another Canadian team.
