The 33 year old veteran defenceman was battling to continue his career on a tryout offer this preseason with the Flames. Barrie proved his worth, and has signed a 1 year contract for $1.25M.
This is a fantastic deal for the Calgary Flames. Projected to be a rebuilding team this season, the Flames can use a veteran presence like Barrie on their blue line and in their locker room. The Flames will be able to use him for this season, and if he's able to succeed in his minutes, potentially they can trade him at the deadline to a cup-contending team and get a quality asset in return.
Tyson Barrie has played 809 career NHL games with the Avalanche, Maple Leafs, Oilers, and Predators. Throughout his career he's been one of the most consistent offensive defenceman, with some shortcomings in defensive zone. Barrie was connected to the Oilers in the offseason for a tryout as well.
In three seasons with the Edmonton Oilers between 2020-2023, Barrie was an anchor on the powerplay and notched over 40 points each year. Barrie was dealt for Mattias Ekholm, and unfortunately he went on to struggle with the Nashville Predators.
Barrie was only dressed for 41 games last year and scratched for most of the playoffs, because the Predators were unhappy with his defensive play. Barrie requested a trade, but a move never materialized. His career took a hit since his time with the Oilers, and this season in Calgary is a great opportunity to bounce back.
When the Battle of Alberta isn't on, plenty of Oilers fans will be wishing the best for Barrie reviving his career. The Oilers will face off against Barrie and the Flames for the first time this season at home on October 12th.
