One amazing and often overlooked bonus of winning the Stanley Cup is having your name engraved on it afterwards. The name engravings on the Cup signify just how important the contributions of individuals were to a team's success.
Florida had two players who previously didn't meet the conditions to have their names on the Cup, but the team petitioned to have their names engraved, which was approved by the NHL.
To have your name engraved on the cup, a player has to play 41 games in the regular season or play one game in the Stanley Cup playoffs. If a player doesn't meet those requirements, their team can petition to the league to have their names added anyway if they can justify the importance of the players.
The team wanted to have Jonah Gadjovich and Josh Mahura added to the engravings, since they were both still massive parts of Florida's success. They played 39 and 30 games respectively, coming in just under the requirements for regular season games played. Both had dealt with injuries that prevented them from playing more, making both pretty easy cases for their name to be added.
It's interesting to think about, but if the Oilers had won the cup they definitely would have appealed to have Sam Gagner and James Hamblin added. Both had played around the same games as Mahura, who got his name on the Cup. Instead the Oilers will have to wait another year, and see if they can earn their engraving at the end of next season.
