Calgary Flames Take Action With Surprise Roster Move

In a significant move, the Calgary Flames have placed veteran defenseman Jordan Oesterle on waivers, as reported by Chris Johnston of TSN. Oesterle, boasting a decade of NHL experience, joined the Flames during the summer, signing a contract following his two-year tenure with the Detroit Red Wings that concluded in 2021.

New Opportunity Beckons

Oesterle, typically the team's seventh defenseman, may find increased playing time in the upcoming games. This change is a result of a recent four-game suspension handed to Rasmus Andersson. So far this season, Oesterle has averaged slightly over 14 minutes of ice time per game, with a -2 rating and no points on his record.

Although it's improbable that Oesterle will be claimed off waivers in the next 24 hours, his cost-effective cap hit makes him an appealing option for teams in need of short-term defensive assistance. The Minnesota Wild, Philadelphia Flyers, and San Jose Sharks are among the potential suitors seeking to bolster their defensive ranks.

If another team does claim Oesterle, it's expected that his role within the new organization won't deviate significantly from his current position with the Flames. Nevertheless, Calgary urgently needs to shed his $925K cap hit, as they currently have only $295K in salary cap space available after utilizing LTIR.
