Earlier this season, the NHL found themselves in massive controversy as they made the decision to hand teams and players from wearing anything to show support for any specialty nights, including Pride Night among others like Hockey Fights Cancer and Military Appreciation Night. The rule didn't last long, as Coyotes' defenceman Travis Dermott was the first to ignore the rule and use Pride tape to show his support. Now, Connor McDavid is following suit.
The NHL quickly realized that silencing players for their humanitarian beliefs was obviously the wrong move, and have since reversed the regulation onto players. Still, it's significant that Connor McDavid as the best player in the world is taking the bold enough action of using tape to show his beliefs in light of whatever controversy exists. Other Oilers, including Leon Draisaitl, also used Pride Tape in warmup. It's true leadership from the Oilers' captain.
