Moments ago, NHL insider Kevin Weekes broke the news that the Edmonton Oilers are looking to move on from their young former first round pick, Phillip Broberg.

Drafted 8th overall by the Oilers in the 2019 draft, Broberg is still just 22 years old, but hasn't developed quickly enough to make the roster as an everyday player. This season, he's been between the NHL and AHL, playing 10 and 4 games in each league respectively. With the Oilers, Broberg hasn't recorded any points, and had a -2 rating.

Despite just making $863K for the rest of this season, the Oilers are tight enough that the salary cap that any trade will have to see less or equal money coming back. Due to the salary limitations, the Oilers will likely be looking to take on another young player, or a veteran near league minimum.

It's likely that the Oilers are looking for a player that can make more of an impact on the current roster with winning aspirations, rather than waiting for Broberg to develop into the player they envisioned at the draft. Hopefully, Ken Holland can pull off a good value deal for Broberg.
