Earlier tonight on TSN's insider trading, NHL insider Darren Dreger provided a significant update to the team's plans with their 22 year old defenceman Phillip Broberg, who recently requested a trade.

The first round draft pick of the Oilers back in 2019, the club still has high hopes for Broberg, but is unwilling to give him the playing time he desires in the NHL. He's a serviceable defenceman, but doesn't have the style and refined game that the Oilers are seeking on their blueline as they look to contend for a Stanley Cup.

The team does however, have a massive problem in Jack Campbell that could be potentially mitigated by Broberg. Dreger reported that the Oilers could likely use Broberg as a sweetener in a trade that sends Campbell out of Edmonton, along with his massive contract.

If Ken Holland and the front office can find a way to use Broberg and his trade request to move Jack Campbell and his contract, it would be a massive win for the organization. It will likely cost Broberg and more to move Campbell's 3 more years at $5M each season, and it would be tough to see Broberg go so early in his career - but it would definitely be the best thing for the organization.
