Unexpected AHL Move for Oilers Goalie Jack Campbell

Jack Campbell experienced an unforeseen demotion to the AHL, catching him off guard. Despite reveling in the recent extension of his contract with the Oilers, Campbell openly admitted to the media this week that the decision to send him down was surprising.

Campbell's early-season struggles prompted the Oilers to reassign him to the AHL's Bakersfield Condors. Known fondly as 'Soupy,' he faced a challenging 1-4-0 record with the Oilers, coupled with a discouraging 4.50 goals-against average and a lackluster .873 save percentage.

Ahead of his debut with the Condors, where he faced four goals on 20 shots, including one with an unusual scent, Campbell shared his perspective on the unexpected turn of events:

"It was pretty tough, not gonna lie. I'm pretty hard on myself, I think that's pretty well documented around the hockey world. Obviously, it's a results league up there - really anywhere - but I felt like I was playing well, had some confidence. But obviously, the numbers weren't good enough."

At 31 years old, Campbell is navigating the second season of a substantial five-year $25-million deal.

Now in the AHL, Campbell had quit the rough first game to say the least.
