Earlier today, NHL insider Frank Seravalli gave a major update on the Edmonton Oilers' plans going into the trade deadline. According to Seravalli, the Oilers will likely be trading Brett Kulak in the coming weeks before the trade deadline.

On Seravalli's trade target list, Kulak ranked to be the 11th most likely player to be traded at the trade deadline. According to Seravalli and several other insiders, the Oilers may be looking to upgrade on defence, or could move Kulak to free up salary cap space to trade for a forward.

The Oilers like Kulak. The Stony Plain, Alta., native likes playing in Edmonton. Full stop. It's just that if the Oilers are going to manufacture salary cap space to make a big trade deadline acquisition, Kulak might have to be the casualty.

It was initially believed that the Oilers may look at moving Warren Foegele, Ryan McLeod, or Cody Ceci instead, but it's clear now that Kulak is the most likely Oiler to be on their way out this year. Foegele and McLeod have both played exceptionally well lately, and Ceci could be harder to replace as a right-shot defenceman.

If the Oilers seek an upgrade to the defence, they've been linked to Sean Walker from the Flyers, Jakob Chychrun from the Senators, and Chris Tanev from the Flames. More likely however, the Oilers will try to add to their greatest strength and acquire a top six forward. There, the team has been linked primarily to Jake Guentzel from the Penguins, which would be an incredible addition by GM Ken Holland if the money can fit.
