Chiasson last played for the Red Wings in the 2022-23 season, and attempted an NHL comeback this season on a tryout offer with Detroit.
Unfortunately, he wasn't able to reach that final gear to earn another NHL job, and Chiasson was cut loose from his tryout.
Now after some time has passed and no other offers came in, Chiasson is hanging up the skates at 34 years old.
The Montreal native Chiasson was selected by the Dallas Stars in the second round of the 2009 NHL Draft, and he began his pro career with the team.
Last measuring at 6'4 and 208 pounds, Chiasson was an effective power forward winger through a much lower scoring era of hockey than we see today.
In his 651 career games, Chiasson became an NHL journeyman playing for 7 different teams: the Dallas Stars, Ottawa Senators, Calgary Flames, Washington Captials, Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Canucks, and Detroit Red Wings.
He played the longest with the Edmonton Oilers, consistently in the lineup from 2018-2021. His career best season came with the Oilers in 2018-19, scoring a decent 22 goals and 38 points.
The Edmonton Oilers have one other veteran forward on the brink of a retirement announcement as well. Sam Gagner was cut from the Carolina Hurricanes this season, but is trying to pick up steam from Team Canada at the Spengler Cup.
Oilers fans will wish the absolute best to Chiasson in the next chapter of his life, and thank him for three good seasons in Edmonton.
