The Edmonton Oilers have been linked to Anaheim Ducks star goalie John Gibson in recent weeks, and now, some analyst are looking at what it would cost to acquire him in trade.

There were concrete reports connecting Gibson to Edmonton, but Oilers GM Stan Bowman has since rejected the idea of trading for a goaltender.

Anaheim Ducks analyst shares expected trade cost for John Gibson in trade

OilersNation analysts recently reached out to their counterparts in Anaheim to discuss the potential price for the Oilers to acquire Gibson. Ducks analyst Derek Lee believes Anaheim would need a goaltender in return at a minimum, but it surely would cost more assets - but perhaps not in futures.

A goaltender would need to come back in a hypothetical deal. I'm not sure how open the Oilers would be to moving Skinner, but getting Calvin Pickard back as part of the return makes for a suitable backup for Dostál, who is currently pegged to be the long-term solution in goal.

Aside from that, I'm not really sure what else the Ducks would be looking for. They're at the point in their rebuild where an emphasis on acquiring picks for assets isn't necessary anymore.

If the Ducks aren't looking for future assets in return for Gibson, they're more likely to see young players that can help their team right away - which may hurt the Oilers who have limited options in that department.

The Oilers really have only one young player who looks ready to make the jump for his NHL career: top prospect Matthew Savoie. It would be extremely tough to depart with him after only one season where his prospect stock rebounded, but it has been floated previously to get an impact trade deadline player like Gibson.

In addition, the Oilers would need to get salary retention on Gibson's $6.4M contract. That may cost them more in future assets, to the point where the trade becomes untenable for Edmonton.

There's full trade could plausibly be Calvin Pickard, Matthew Savoie, and draft picks for Gibson at 50% retained for three seasons. That's a steep price for Edmonton, where they may be better off looking at other options.

Oilers trading for John Gibson looks unlikely, other goalies may still be possible

Gibson is a veteran goaltender having a fantastic season, that would directly help the Oilers biggest roster weakness in the crease. There's some concern that Gibson had poor results on the last few years on brutal Ducks teams, but now at 31 years old, he's having a fantastic year with a .915 save percentage.

He'd have to accept a no-trade clause to move to the Oilers, which may be tough. Gibson reportedly wants to be the unquestioned starter - which would mean trading Stuart Skinner. It's yet another factor that makes this trade more unlikely.

Although it'd be exciting to get a star goaltender like Gibson, the Oilers may be better suited to look at other options to address the crease before entering the playoffs.

For now, the very fact they've been credibly linked to exploring John Gibson, suggests that they are interested in a goalie trade - despite what the GM says publicly.

Do you think the Oilers will still make a goalie trade, even if they can't get Gibson?
