32 Thoughts podcaster and Sportsnet hockey insider Elliotte Friedman explained during his latest pod that players have been notified that trades are likely to happen during the Four Nations faceoff tournament.
32 Thoughts Podcast: Elliotte says some players have been told there is going to be action during the 4 Nations break. There is a feeling around some teams that players won't return.
Oilers reviewing their talent and plan for March trade deadline
He revealed that there is no trade freeze during the Four Nations face off which means teams can conduct their business as they choose and make trades even if the NHL is playing its special tournament.
Kyle Bukauskas asked if the NHL requested general managers not to make trades during the tournament but Friedman suggested that they would likely not make their deals during big game days.
Oilers general manager Stan Bowman has made a couple of moves over the course of the season and will likely continue to scour the league to see what will be available in at what cost.
Bowman has made it clear that the Oilers do need to upgrade in certain areas especially secondary scoring and on their defense.
"There is that feeling around that some guys will not return to where they are." In the latest 32 Thoughts, @sportsnetkyle and @FriedgeHNICdiscuss the potential for trades during the #4Nations break, player holdouts, and more.
Oilers waiting and watching for the right deal
Chatter has emerged for the past couple of weeks that even goaltending might be considered as a possible area of upgrading as some teams have fallen off the mark pit when it comes to a playoff hunt.
The NHL will be on an extended break from February 12 all the way till February 22nd which will give general managers including Bowman plenty of time to potentially craft a deal or two.
Many think the Oilers will load up and use some draft picks or prospects to get a big deal done while others think the team will trim around the edges and keep the majority of the team intact.
Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts says John Gibson's preference if he is traded would be EDM or CAR. Friedman says someone told him that last week there was talks about the Oilers and Gibson. Adds that Gibson wants to be a #1 and he doesn't know if a Gibson/Skinner duo will work. It should be an interesting time for Oilers fans and the rest of the NHL as the air of change and trade continues to blow around the league.
