The Oilers decided to bring in Kris Knoblauch and legendary Oilers Paul Coffey as their replacements in hopes that it would turn the season around. That's not the case, and it appears the firing of the head coach was not necessary.
The worries of many fans from last year are coming to fruition this year as the defensive play and the goaltending have always been the suspects of this team in the McDavid era. Time after time, the team simply cannot keep the puck out of their net, and they're finding it increasingly difficult to score their way out of these defensive deficiencies.
Rumors have been flying about what the Oilers will do next, and it seems one player, in particular, was mentioned by TSN's Ryan Rishaug as someone who may help the Oilers in the near future. Rishaug explained that Patrick Maroon would be a player that could help the Oilers in the short term with his playoff performance and physicality in the game.
Would a 4th liner like Maroon really help them with so many other problems facing this team? It's hard to say.
It's a belief that Holland is scouring through the league making calls, trying to find a new goaltender who will help stop the bleeding, including a potential trade from the Montreal Canadiens for veteran goalie Jake Allen.
One thing is certain: the Oilers have only so much runway to fix this, and it appears the runway's running out."
