An expanded Edmonton Oilers group hit the ice for the first time today before training camp, and one scary sight unfolded to start the year.

According to Jason Gregor, Victor Arvidsson and Connor McDavid got tripped up, and McDavid went down for a brief moment. Gregor said that rink fell quiet for a moment, but McDavid was able to get up and walk off on his own.

»[McDavid] looked fine after. Skated off and sat on bench. Then when they left he walked off and looked fine. Which is why I said just a scare. It went really quiet for a short period.»
- Jason Gregor

Obviously, McDavid sustaining any form of injury is the absolute worst case scenario for the Edmonton Oilers. It's positive news that he appeared fine, but if Gregor's account of the fall is accurate, it wouldn't be surprising to see McDavid take the next few days off the ice. Players obviously want to ramp up before the season begins, but getting injured in training camp or preseason games are always particularly tough to recover from. There's no doubt McDavid would get back up to speed, but they should just be very cautious to avoid injury.

Connor McDavid always has a way of responding to criticism and adversity over his career. He faced criticism that he wasn't a goal scorer, then scored 60 goals. He faced criticism that he wasn't a playoff performer, and now has dragged the Oilers on multiple playoff runs. After being so close to the Stanley Cup last year, it's extremely exciting to see how motivated McDavid will come out this season with the goal of winning it all this year.

From day one of training camp this year, everyone knows the Oilers are expecting to make it all the way back to the Finals. Hopefully, McDavid and anyone else doesn't get any injuries in preseason that could hinder them throughout the year.
