The Oilers have been eying a call up for Philp since training camp this season, where the 26 year old came out of retirement and was turning heads with his 200 foot play.
The Edmonton Oilers announced the news of their recall on social media. There was no corresponding roster move, so the Oilers will be dipping into their LTIR spending with this roster move.
In training camp this season, Noah Philp showed that he may be able to serve as the team's fourth line center for their playoff stretch this season.
Philp plays a reliable two way game, and at 6'2 and 26 years old, he can bring plenty more speed and physicality than the 37 year old Derek Ryan.
The Oilers should be calling up Philp to give him an extended run of games and give him the opportunity to prove that he can be an effective player at the NHL level.
Noah Philp should get a stretch of games to prove that he should stick on the roster, while Jeff Skinner and Derek Ryan are trying to keep their spot on the roster.
Philp could be the team's best option for a playoff-style 4th line forward, much better than Derek Ryan or Jeff Skinner as a healthy scratch at the least.
This roster move should also hint towards the Oilers sending down Josh Brown to the AHL in the coming days, or perhaps placing Jeff Skinner or Derek Ryan on waivers. If Noah Philp can prove himself to be part of the team's future, he will make an older veteran expendable.
